Rhea Suite

The eight New Cascadia colony AIs — Strong-type intelligences built by Traxus OffWorld Industries (series Traxus X-A, 64 RB logic cores, inception 2461) deployed to Tau Ceti IV aboard the UESC Marathon, operating as a single family suite designated Rhea. All eight are nonfunctional, dormant, or otherwise inaccessible in the present day.

What the source establishes — canon

Build specifications

Captain Clemente di Roxas’s voyage overview catalogues the colony AIs’ specs verbatim[^1]:

  • Type: Strong
  • Logic Core size: 64 RB
  • Manufacturer: Traxus OffWorld Industries
  • Inception date: 2461
  • Series: Traxus X-A
  • Family suite designation: Rhea

The Marathon itself separately lists eleven “cutting-edge strong Artificial Intelligences” aboard — three dedicated to ship operations and eight destined to oversee every aspect of the colony1. The ship AI (Leela/Tycho/Durandal) belong to an earlier series: Traxus IX-A, family suite Hermes, inception 24092. The Rhea suite is therefore a generation newer, purpose-built for colony rather than ship operations.

The roster and functions

The eight AIs and their assigned roles, as written by di Roxas[^1]:

Internal suite structure

The Cerebral Records retrieved from Dire Marsh describe sub-suite groupings within Rhea3:

  • Focused (primary) sub-suite: Arthur · Lilith · Bastion
  • Sub-suite (Icarus/Darius): under Bastion
  • Sub-suite (Gabriel/Joy): under Lilith

Arthur is designated as the “initial colony AI developed for the Tau Ceti IV colony project” and head of the suite; all others serve under his guidance3.

Deployment sequence to the surface

Di Roxas’s colonization protocol documents the staged rollout[^5]:

  1. Bastion — first AI relocated to the surface; based at Javelin (the seed outpost).
  2. Darius — relocated to Anchor (AgHub).
  3. Naraah — relocated to Abyss.
  4. Arthur and Gabriel — transfer to Hearth (Central Living Complex).
  5. Lilith and Joy — remain aboard the Marathon for several years to oversee colonist wake-cycling; transition planetside afterward.

Icarus is the only colony AI not based on Tau Ceti IV — his core is an interconnected array of orbital satellites, with subroutines deployed in the first wave of outpost stations4. He operated in a limited capacity during the voyage itself, aiding in navigation.

The Family Suite Protocol

Dr. Bernard Strauss’s audiobook On AI (2472) explains the protocol’s origins[^7]: it was developed jointly by the UESC, Traxus OffWorld Science Works, and specialists in the aftermath of the Traxus-IV/MarsNet tragedy. The core principle is three-or-more AIs “interlinked but autonomous,” operating two-on-one risk analysis — “no single intelligence has the capacity to subvert its programming to reach the thresholds that threaten the system with rampancy.” The Rhea suite extends this logic to eight interconnected AIs rather than three.

Strauss’s voyage journal confirms the Family Suite was viewed as the primary safeguard against rampancy, supplemented by human staff monitoring and automated data-monitoring applications5.

The suite’s failure — documented pattern

The UESC present-day status report records the outcome plainly: “Colony AI is nonfunctional, dormant, or otherwise inaccessible. Colony records indicate severe malfunction across the entire suite6. General Reed’s classified memo after the “0307” event notes that the UESC “were able to fully partition the planetary intelligence suites” in the immediate aftermath7.

Individual documented failure modes:

  • Darius (Agriculture): Repeated recompiles and manual purges failed due to [ANOMALOUS ORIGIN]; forced remote override produced garbled outburst; taken offline by “emergency administrative fiat.” Present-day ONI/CyberAcme diagnostic finds his failure does not meet classical stage-1 rampancy criteria89.
  • Darius (Data Logs): Dire Marsh logs show Darius in confinement, looping, performing self-described “datacide,” and referencing “The Anomaly is calling” and “strange energies gnawing at the heart of this world”101112.
  • Joy (Outreach): Post-colony AI Recollection shows Joy, in the abandoned colony, silently playing back 324 children’s audio files from the “Emotional Support Companion” youth acclimation project, then entering standby13. Her colony-era self-diagnostic shows all systems nominal but “Empathetic reasoning slightly elevated” and a Family Suite watchdog running — with a fourth concept-map feature whose “unusual omission may be the result of past suppression” noted by ONI1415.
  • Dire Marsh Uplink: The AI Uplink in Southeast Marsh shows “signs of limited power/operational functionality,” appears vacated, and the Runners’ Guide notes this may be “tied to this REGION’s proximity to THE ANOMALY”16.

Security rampancy preparedness documentation confirms that a Stage 2 intelligence engaging the Family Suite would be “taxing to the point of inoperability” for all connected intelligences17.

Source-silent / open questions

  • Arthur, Lilith, Bastion, Gabriel, Naraah are named and spec’d but have no confirmed individual failure accounts in the pack. Their fate is covered only by the suite-wide “severe malfunction” finding6. Each warrants a dedicated hub once per-AI volumes are found.
  • What happened on 0307 — the event Reed references in his memo. The source names it but does not describe it. The suite failure, the loss of the Marathon as a vessel, and the colony collapse are linked to it, but the mechanism is unknown from the pack.
  • Naraah is named once in the roster and once in the deployment sequence and never elaborated further in the pack. No Cerebral Record or failure account is present.
  • Whether the Family Suite’s internal watchdog functions (the Rhea equivalent of IDEA for the Hermes suite) exist and what happened to them. The Hermes suite had IDEA; no analogous diagnostics AI for Rhea appears in the pack.
  • The “suppressed” fourth concept-map feature in Joy’s data15 — who suppressed it and why is not stated.
