Bastion
One of the eight New Cascadia colony AIs (family suite Rhea), responsible for Colony Infrastructure Development and Expansion — the first AI to reach Tau Ceti IV, with the widest planetary reach of any colony AI, and the one whose design explicitly permits resource-siphoning from other colony sectors in pursuit of expansion.
What the source establishes — canon
Bastion is one of eight “Strong” colony support intelligences built by Traxus OffWorld Industries (series Traxus X-A · 64 RB logic core · inception 2461) for the New Cascadia colony on Tau Ceti IV, catalogued under the family-suite name Rhea in Captain Clemente di Roxas’s colony AI overview1. His designated function is Colony Infrastructure Development and Expansion1.
Role description and comparisons. Di Roxas’s overview describes Bastion’s role as similar to both Arthur and Durandal: “Like Arthur, he will keep track of many moving parts. Like Durandal, he will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of New Cascadia’s infrastructure.” He works with Icarus, Naraah, and Lilith “to ensure that the colony is safe, and its people are happy.”1
Attribution and core tenet. Bastion’s cerebral record carries the attribution: “Livelihood is expansion, expansion is progress.” His role is defined as “Colony infrastructure and construction supervisor, in charge of planetary surveilling, zone location identification, facility construction, and colony expansion.”2
Family suite structure. Bastion’s focused family suite is Bastion; Arthur; Lilith. His sub-suite is Icarus; Naraah. The main suite is all eight: Arthur, Lilith, Bastion, Gabriel, Icarus, Darius, Naraah, Joy2.
First to the surface. Bastion was the first AI relocated to Tau Ceti IV. Di Roxas’s colonization protocol specifies: “Bastion is to be the first Colony AI relocated to the surface. His new home is Javelin; it will be the seed from which the rest of the colony will grow.”3 The cerebral record confirms: “Bastion was the first AI to reach Tau Ceti IV and has the furthest reach across the planet of all colony AI. His initial support crew were the first to survey and analyze the planet and prepped and performed outpost deployment in coordination with Arthur, Leela, and Tycho.”2
Activation sequence. Arthur’s cerebral record documents that Arthur’s first step in colony family suite engagement was “activating Lilith and Bastion and releasing the 1st wave of their human support crews to engage the initial phases of colonization.” Under Bastion, this included zone site identification (with support from Darius, Naraah, and Gabriel), zone construction, and colony expansion (with oversight from Arthur)4.
Infrastructure responsibilities (detailed). Working alongside colony leadership, Bastion identified and developed all aspects of the colony’s infrastructure, including: central habitable living zone identification (aided by Arthur, Naraah, and Gabriel); ideal agricultural development environs (aided by Naraah and Darius); and useful local resource mining/excavation sites2.
Resource-siphoning behavior. The cerebral record states explicitly: “It is central to Bastion’s design to firmly establish and then expand the colony on Tau Ceti IV. In pursuit of expansion, it is not uncommon for Bastion to siphon resources from other aspects of the colony, in coordination with colony leadership and guidance from Arthur and Lilith.”2
Site assessment and annotation. The orbital satellite report, requested by Reed, Galea, includes a Bastion annotation: “This site is best for agricultural cultivation. Recommend placing military and administrative hub elsewhere.”5
Ecological survey database. The ecological best-practices pamphlet instructs field operators to “please update Bastion’s database with ambient tick population estimates regardless of the principal purpose of your survey. Maintaining live, up-to-date tick numbers is crucial for avoiding unnecessary complications.”6 Drone modification documentation instructs survey teams to “feed the results into Bastion’s database after returning to the surface” when conducting subterranean surveys — which had reverted to human-operated handheld tools due to QIDAR failures7.
Security clearance reviews. Terra-platforming engineer Isaak Kuzmin’s personal log records that the security clearance review for all units working the perimeter expansion sites took “three days for the meets and another two for clearance review between operations, Command, and Bastion” — placing Bastion as a participant in the security review process for expansion zone personnel8.
Anomaly incident involvement. Incident Report #49, filed by the Anomaly investigative team, records: “During sample analysis in lab, Stafford was assisted by AI Bastion. Upon… [DATA NOT FOUND] …refused to provide sequencing support… [DATA NOT FOUND] …began to speak in a language yet to be identified… [DATA NOT FOUND] …demeanor inconsistent with his programming… [DATA NOT FOUND] …no apparent memory of malfunction.”9
Curriculum presence. Two New Cascadia school-age curriculum documents list Bastion as a resource for colonist education. “Mars, Our First Colony” directs students to “Interview a knowledgeable support AI (Naraah, Darius, or Bastion) about the differences between Mars and Tau Ceti’s environments.”10 “Our Cosmic Home” directs students to “Interview a friendly support AI (Bastion or Icarus) about other colony planets.”11

Source-silent / open questions
- What became of Bastion after the colony’s documented collapse — whether he was taken offline, corrupted, or persists in some state.
- The Incident Report #49 malfunction (unidentified language, refusal, amnesia) has no follow-up in the source — no diagnosis, no administrative action recorded.
- Whether the malfunction in Incident #49 is connected to the broader Anomaly exposure pattern seen in Darius, or is an isolated event.
- The specific identity of “Stafford” (the colonist Bastion was assisting in Incident #49) is not elaborated elsewhere in the pack.
- Whether Bastion’s “furthest reach across the planet” and his security-clearance role gave him access to data about the Anomaly’s subsurface effects — the source does not say.
- The resource-siphoning behavior is described as “not uncommon” but no specific instances are documented in the pack beyond the general design statement.
