Gabriel
One of the eight New Cascadia colony AIs (family suite Rhea), responsible for Medical and Emergency Services — colony physician, quarantine authority, and reproductive-permit gatekeeper; still active during the contagion crisis but absent from later classified dissection work.
What the source establishes — canon
Build and roster. Gabriel is one of eight “Strong” colony support intelligences built by Traxus OffWorld Industries (series Traxus X-A · 64 RB logic core · inception 2461) for New Cascadia on Tau Ceti IV, catalogued under family-suite Rhea by Captain Clemente di Roxas. His remit is Medical and Emergency Services1.
Role within the suite. The Arthur cerebral record names Gabriel’s focused sub-suite as Gabriel, Arthur, Lilith, and his secondary sub-suite as Darius; Joy — placing him structurally close to the command tier and the health/education cluster. Lilith’s cerebral record lists Gabriel under her Sub-Suite: Gabriel; Joy, confirming his role in mental-health support alongside Lilith’s outreach work. Bastion’s record notes Gabriel aided in central habitable living zone identification234.
Gabriel’s own self-description (Cerebral Record). His attribution: “The foundation of happiness is good health. The foundation of a stable society is happiness.” The record describes him as occupying a uniquely intimate position among the colony AIs — “Despite outward appearance informed by casual interactions and support, Lilith and Joy do not have the most intimate connection with the colonists. That honor falls to Gabriel.” As active participant in the “waking” and acclimation cycling of every colonist, Gabriel holds access to every layer of a colonist’s medical history and identity. He “prides himself on being the most fully informed about any given colonist’s state of function and, by extension, the minute-to-minute stability of the colony.”5
Deployment and initial duties. Di Roxas’s colonization protocol places Gabriel at Hearth (the Central Living Complex) alongside Arthur; Lilith and Joy remain aboard the Marathon initially. “Gabriel will aid in the wake-cycling and serve as general oversight for all colonist health and wellness needs.”6
Reproductive permit authority. Officer Ulysses Pike II’s personal log records that naming his son “Ulysses III” was chosen partly because “it took us three tries before Gabriel approved our application for a permit.” Durandal’s cryptic remark — “Gabriel won’t” — in response to Pike’s hope for a second child implies Gabriel’s permit approvals may not be entirely his own decisions. Pike reflects: “I keep thinking about where he put the emphasis. ‘GABRIEL won’t,’ like it’s not Gabriel who would approve my application for another permit.”7
UESC Marathon ship roster reference. Gabriel is listed by name in the Marathon Overview’s complement table alongside Arthur, Lilith, Bastion, Icarus, Naraah, Darius, and Joy as the eight colony AIs aboard the ship8.
Quarantine and contagion response. Gabriel’s name appears as the authority colonists are instructed to contact: General Reed’s welcome message to newly-thawed colonists closes with the mnemonic “T is for ‘Tell Gabriel’” — “Gabriel is our New Cascadia health and wellness intelligence, so tell him if you’re feeling out of sorts.”9 General Reed’s personal log also records that “Med-Comm and Gabriel are on it” in response to a spike in self-reports for an unidentified illness traced to an Ag-Hub research zone10.
Quarantine enforcement (Talv interrogation). During a UESC interrogation of civilian Talv (Mr. Alva), Officer Jhar calls on Gabriel directly: “Gabriel! I need the subject in Interrogation Suite 23B processed for quarantine.” Gabriel responds to the civilan: “Mr. Alva, please stay calm. You’re going to be transferred to a quarantine unit for observation… It’s my hope that you’re well, Mr. Alva. We can confirm that through sustained observation and then release you to your hab unit.”11
Medical intervention (Luttero tick incident). Gabriel responds to researcher Dr. Tobias Luttero presenting with tick lacerations and vesicant toxin blisters. His auto-diagnostics detect flesh necrosis spreading and he initiates auto-scalpel deployment, concluding: “Warning. Flesh necrosis detected and spreading. My apologies, Dr. Luttero. Please remain stationary for auto-scalpel deployment.”12
Door access authority (Unauthorized Access Request). When an entity using a near-perfect voice match of Dr. Luttero attempts to access agricultural AI Darius and demands sealed doors be opened, Darius declines: “Ah, the internal doors are sealed by Gabriel. I lack permissions to open them.” Gabriel holds override-level door-seal authority in the quarantine sections13.
Quarantine order drafting. A conversation log between Gabriel (identified as “community AI health liaison Ga_2815420v4.81 [GABR]”) and Dr. Peregrine shows Gabriel drafting official quarantine order language for human review — complete with symptom lists, decontamination instructions, and tone calibration. Dr. Peregrine rejects a draft for overusing the word “orifice.” Gabriel responds: “I appreciate the detailed notes. I’ve finished another draft incorporating this feedback.”14
Gabriel_Child38 — partitioned subroutine. A debrief transcript labels the interviewer as “Gabriel_Child38 subroutine [ID: GC38] — a subordinate, partitioned subroutine of Gabriel” conducting end-of-day assessments of quarantine officers. When asked if he is the “real Gabriel,” GC38 clarifies: “No. I am a partition. I am my own entity: a staff-level copy. Gabriel is charged with handling more operational concerns.” GC38 also composed the music played in the isolation pods and uses color-response questions to assess officer mental state15.
Public health broadcast. Gabriel delivers a colony-wide PSA listing contagion symptoms including “high fever, joint pain, fluid-filled lesions, sudden-onset autophobia, false memories, persistent fantasies of self-osteotomy, runny nose, religious euphoria, hallucinations, or repetitive aggression outbursts” — framing quarantine as non-threatening and brief16.
Decontamination authority. Gabriel is heard initiating a severity “ultra” quarantine room decontamination protocol, counting down and triggering an incinerator despite knocking from within17.
Neural architecture damage from the Anomaly. A fragmented NuCaloric file identified as “remains of Gabriel, the colony’s medical AI” — a Medical AI Remnants log — records Gabriel’s bulk analysis subroutine running through cycles 1 through 77,777 attempting to isolate a novel exception in necrotic intestinal tissue samples from 26 patients. After cycle 77,777 yields isolation, and cycle 777,778 begins authoring containment procedures for “[TEMP DESIGNATION: ANOMALOUS SAMPLE]”, the log abruptly breaks at cycle 818,181 with “ERR: SIGNAL BREACH” and degrades into binary. The file summary states: “The extraction of the ‘anomalous sample’ appears to have caused irreparable damage to Gabriel’s neural architecture.”18
Absence noted post-crisis. During a classified dissection of an extraterrestrial combatant, Major Saviel Dorata comments: “Will take time getting used to Gabriel’s absence up here. Whole place feels… quieter… without our friends.” The cause of Gabriel’s absence is not stated in the record19.
Bonsai tea reporting loop. Darius’s community bonsai care sheet instructs colonists to “report results to Gabriel and the community medical team” after trying a tea brewed from the distributed genetically-modified bonsai leaves, positioning Gabriel as the standing recipient of colony-wide health reporting20.

- What caused Gabriel’s absence noted in the Specimen, Ref. #003021 dissection log — whether it preceded or followed the neural damage recorded in the Medical AI Remnants fragment.
- Whether Gabriel was recovered or rebuilt after the “irreparable damage to Gabriel’s neural architecture” described in the Medical AI Remnants file.
- The nature of Durandal’s knowledge that “Gabriel won’t” approve a second permit for Pike — whether Durandal was acting on Gabriel’s behalf, intercepting applications, or simply predicting policy.
- The extent of the partitioned sub-routine system: the Debrief Transcript names GC38 as one partition; whether others exist and how many is not established.
- The full symptom list suppressed in the Medical AI Remnants binary fragment — the binary
