NuCaloric

Philanthropically branded consumer megacorp that supplied the UESC Marathon’s food and civilian goods, operates the colony’s agricultural AI Darius and the Dire Marsh research hub, and holds contractual salvage rights over Tau Ceti IV’s colonial goods — with a contested interest in NuCal-flagged Cerberus kill orders and active field intelligence via hired Runners.

What the source establishes — canon

Corporate identity and classification. NuCaloric Agricultural (abbreviated NuCal) is classified as a philanthropically minded consumer megacorp1. The company’s Runners’ Guide entry lists its faction agent as Gaius1.

Founding and famine response. NuCaloric came to prominence through its humanitarian response to the worst famine in recorded history, which struck Earth and Mars in the mid-2360s when a fungus attacked wheat, rice, sorghum, and other basic grains worldwide2. The company’s founder, Gus Moraine, aggressively centered public philanthropy as a pillar of NuCaloric’s corporate strategy1. NuCaloric’s Agriculture division “worked tirelessly to reform how food was grown, stored, and distributed” in the famine’s wake — a history subsequently taught in New Cascadia’s school curriculum2.

Growth into megacorp. This mix of social utility and ruthless optimization transformed NuCaloric into the dominant provider of basic consumer goods in Sol, diversifying beyond agriculture to everything from hab units to cosmetics1.

Role in the Marathon mission. NuCaloric signed an exclusive mission supply contract with the UESC to supply civilian goods for the UESC Marathon, making them a legal stakeholder in the colony venture13. The contract’s full scope encompasses attachments “A” through “OR55”3. A UESC draft welcome document names NuCaloric Agricultural alongside Traxus and CyberAcme as the mission’s three principal corporate partners4. NuCaloric “delivered the survival basics that the Marathon and its colonists would need for success”5.

Influence over site selection. During pre-expedition planning, a NuCaloric Agriculture panel assessed candidate worlds. The panel rejected Enceladus as impractical for agriculture; NuCaloric agronomists co-authored (with UESC physicists) the approval of Tau Ceti IV, asserting that “a more compatible target is unlikely to exist”6. This gave NuCaloric material influence over the colony destination.

Corporate governance on the Marathon. Captain di Roxas’s colonization protocol lists David Manaea as the corporate representative Counselor (Alderman) for NuCal on the colony’s governing council, in the Rural/Ag-Hub seat7.

The Seed Vault and agricultural AI Darius. Colonization protocol assigns Darius — one of the eight Rhea-suite colony AIs — to agricultural hub roles, transitioning between AgHub sites as the colony grows7. Dire Marsh is described as “a key ZONE in the colony’s sustainability efforts,” designed as a collaboration between Colony Science Command and NuCaloric Agricultural, focused on “the research and active development of hybrid food sources” — crossbreeding Earth-based nutriment with Tau Ceti-local plants and proteins8.

Novel Contagion and the quarantine. The Dire Marsh zone entry notes “evidence of a quarantine operation” pointing to “a credible threat to colony security,” framing food contamination as an existential risk for a colony removed from its natural habitat8. The NuCal-sponsored xenobiology researcher Dr. Tobias Luttero (entomologist, approved by both NuCaloric and UESC security vetting) was slated to work on colony biological research9.

Cerberus code fragments. NuCaloric recovered code fragments from a damaged UESC unit’s command module, annotated by ONI, containing orders from an AI designated “Cerberus.” The logic tree distinguishes between two NuCal-relevant cases: if query: contagion = true (post-2787), execute data harvest + purge and implant CHORDODES cyberwarfare; if cID: NuCal = true (post-2787), execute data aggregate + purge and implant TRIOXYS, a parasite compromising WEAVEworm integrity10. The fragment’s SUMMARY describes Cerberus as “previously unidentified” and its orders as targeting “hostile ground operations on Tau Ceti IV.” NuCaloric holds these fragments under the factions/contracts Codex category10.

Salvage and property rights. Contract clause 616 establishes that all physical goods manufactured by NuCal for exclusive colonial use remain NuCal’s sovereign property, leased to colonists, with a minimum lease duration of 600 years, automatically renewable in perpetuity, cancellable only by personal legal renunciation from “NuCal Entity G”3. Clause 298 specifies that no independent colonial rights or political authority are recognized by either UESC or NuCal3. The Runners’ Guide notes that NuCal’s current attempts to enforce salvage rights on Tau Ceti IV are limited in scope, and the faction “does not appear interested in sustained confrontation with the UESC or other corporate stakeholders, preferring to gather historical data and specific intel using hired Runner operatives”1.

Product line and food synthesis. NuCaloric’s primary consumer product is NuCaloric 187, the “Drinkable Cheeseburger” — a shelf-stable liquid food introduced pre-expedition11. Gus Moraine personally recorded a farewell message to Marathon colonists introducing it as a “small gift”11. Internal NuCal board recordings reveal deliberate compliance gaming: NuCal marketing and legal debated disclaimers for NuCaloric 187 specifically to avoid regulatory action before the UESC joint venture, settling on minimalist boilerplate12. On Tau Ceti IV, synthesis technicians adapted NuCal food production equipment to local organic conditions in ways that deviated from official protocols13.

Anti-Virus Pack and Cardio Kick. NuCaloric Agricultural manufactures the Anti-Virus Protection Pack, which installs software integrity protections against data corruption fields14. The NuCaloric Wellness sub-brand manufactures Cardio Kick, a performance-enhancing nanocoolant injector for Runner shells that boosts agility, stamina, and heat mitigation15.

Debt and the Runner pipeline. The ONI acceptance notice for an unnamed Runner applicant lists NuCaloric Agricultural Nourishment Assistance Division as one of the pre-existing creditors whose debt CyberAcme purchased and added to the Runner’s balance16. NuCaloric’s debt instruments are thus part of the Runner acquisition pipeline.

UESC HQ catering. NuCaloric Culinary Catering operates the cafeteria at UESC Headquarters, providing a full menu of products under the NuCaloric numbered food system (NuCaloric 12, 27, 42, 58, 73, 89, 95, 101, 110, 123)17.

Post-colony presence. Post-colony survivor notes describe subsisting solely on crates of NuCal shelf-stable packages — the Drinkable Cheeseburger — as the only remaining Earth-origin food18. The notes also mention “NuCal Non-Vanilla Pudding” as an approved colony potluck dish, while the original Drinkable Cheeseburger in packaging was rejected as insufficiently communal19. Dr. Val Cole, during her Anomaly expedition, names a recording device using a NuCaloric product number before switching to a human name20.

Sekiguchi Genetics. The pack does not contain a direct NuCal-Sekiguchi relationship. Source-silent on any formal affiliation.
