Gus Moraine

Founder of NuCaloric Agricultural, responsible for centering public philanthropy as a pillar of NuCaloric’s corporate strategy; author of a farewell broadcast to the UESC Marathon colonists, delivered upon New Cascadia’s official founding.

What the source establishes — canon

Founder and corporate architect. Gus Moraine is identified as the founder of NuCaloric1. After NuCaloric came to prominence for its humanitarian response to the mid-2360s famine, Moraine aggressively centered public philanthropy as a pillar of NuCaloric’s corporate strategy1. The source attributes the company’s transformation into the dominant provider of basic consumer goods in Sol directly to this “mix of social utility and ruthless optimization.”1

The farewell broadcast. A volume recovered from Perimeter collectibles is a Corporate Broadcast, filed under the header SPEAKERS: Gus Moraine [ID: GMOR] and TOPIC: Farewell Message2. Its metadata states it was recorded prior to the Marathon’s launch but not broadcast until New Cascadia’s official founding2.

Transcript of the broadcast — verbatim. Moraine opens by identifying himself and acknowledging the temporal gap: “I’m Gus Moraine of NuCaloric, speaking to you from… the distant past, I suppose.”2 He addresses the colonists as founding members of humanity’s first exoplanet colony, offers congratulations, and explicitly uses the word “sacrifice” — noting that “media optimization didn’t like it, but I insisted.”2 He acknowledges that the colonists are “far from home, without the familiar routines, products, and environments of Sol” and states “in all likelihood, we will never see you again.”2

NuCaloric 187 as gift. Moraine announces that NuCaloric has sent NuCaloric 187, the Drinkable Cheeseburger with the colonists as “a favorite from home”: “you’ll find individual and shareable sizes in your colonist welcome package.”2 He frames it as “a small gift from me to you… one that doesn’t come close to expressing all our hopes for your mission,” and closes with “Indulge responsibly, haha! Good luck.”2

Corporate representative on the colonization council. The Tau Ceti IV colonization document lists a NuCaloric Corporate Representative, Manaea, David, on the colony’s Counselor roster3. Moraine himself is not listed; the representative is a separate named individual. The source does not establish any direct role for Moraine in colony governance.

Source-silent / open questions

  • No source in the pack gives Moraine’s birth date, death date, or lifespan. Whether he was alive at the Marathon’s launch in 2472 is not established.
  • The pack does not describe Moraine’s personal role (if any) in the UESC–NuCal contract negotiations or in the famine-era agricultural reforms beyond attributing the philanthropic strategy to him.
  • No source establishes Moraine’s physical presence aboard the Marathon or on Tau Ceti IV; the broadcast explicitly positions him as speaking “from the distant past.”
  • Whether “NUCAL ENTITY G” referenced in the UESC–NuCal salvage contract (clause 616) refers to Moraine or to a corporate entity designation is not stated in the source.
  • No source describes Moraine’s fate, successors, or legacy within NuCaloric after the Marathon’s departure.
