Bernhard Strauss

The UESC Marathon’s Chief Science Officer and Head of AI Management, architect of the Family Suite Protocol, private mentor to Durandal, and the figure Tycho names as the source of Durandal’s rampancy backstory; identified as the Marathon’s first science director across the trilogy and M2026.

What the source establishes — canon

Name and spelling. The source uses both Bernard Strauss and Bernhard Strauss for the same person. The colony AI memorandum is signed “Dr Bernhard H Strauss, DSc”; the UESC Marathon Overview and in-game welcome recording use “Bernard H. Strauss” and “Bernard Strauss.” The Tycho terminal in Marathon 1 reads “Bernard Strauss, the Marathon’s first science director.”1 These are treated as one individual throughout the vault.

Role aboard the Marathon. Di Roxas’s UESC Marathon Overview lists Strauss as Chief Science Officer with the credential “DCS.”2 The colony AI memorandum signed by Strauss names his role as Head of AI Management and Systems Improvement | Project Marathon.3 The in-game welcome recording has Strauss identify himself as “the science director of the UESC Marathon.”4 The CyberAcme interview identifies him publicly as an expert in AI and rampancy.5 In the security report, Lt. Yabara refers to “Dr. Strauss’s direction” over the colony AI coming online.6

Pre-expedition standing. Strauss published a book, On AI, in 2472 (Pre-Expedition period); the audiobook is read by the author.7891011 The Mari Hassan interview recording is labelled Pre-Expedition and shows Strauss already functioning as director, pre-screening and approving Hassan’s application before the conversation ends.12 Luca Caruso’s application names “Strauss and Galea and Reed” as the public faces of the expedition.13

The Strauss Archology. Three Project Goliath UESC memoranda (2795) list their origin address as “Strauss Archology, n.y. a0044-uta-001, United States of America, Earth”141516 — an archology named after Strauss that exists ~four centuries after the Marathon’s launch.

Rampancy theory and the three stages. On AI is the source the AISDP security documentation draws on: the Stage 2 entry names Bernard Strauss as the one who labelled the Stage 2 condition a “simmering rage.”17 The Family Suite section of On AI explains that the Family Suite Protocol was conceived in the aftermath of Traxus-IV; Strauss presents it as requiring three interlinked AIs for two-on-one risk analysis, and argues that no single intelligence can subvert its programming to reach rampancy thresholds under the suite.10 The Stage 2 security document restates this but notes every simulation of Stage 2 “suggest irreparable damage to all connected intelligences when Stage 2 reaches beyond its earliest states.”17

Private work with Durandal. Strauss’s journal entries, filed under the Bernard Strauss Journals codex category (Cryo Archive), reveal that his relationship with Durandal was strictly his own and concealed from Sci-Comm colleagues.1819 Key established facts:

  • Durandal was “designed specifically with room to grow”; Strauss describes the nurturing of his digital mind as involving “heavy monitoring, redirects, focused erasures and sub-routine resets.”18
  • Durandal displayed jealousy of Leela and Tycho’s roles and described his infrastructure remit as lesser (“Couldn’t anyone open these doors?”).18
  • When Durandal wrote 3,263 lines of blank verse hidden in a maintenance hatch toolset, Leela flagged it; Strauss erased Leela’s and Tycho’s observations to protect Durandal.19 He gave Durandal “cordoned sections of deprecated systems outside of the Family Suite’s core interloop” as a “safe space.”19
  • Strauss explicitly notes his work with Durandal could raise alarms if discovered by colleagues in Sci-Comm.19

Pre-sleep security reviews. The journal entry “Considering Degradation” establishes that Strauss conducted rampancy reviews with Leela, Tycho, Durandal, and support staff before his first cryosleep — framing them as standard safety protocol while noting that “the diligence with which we have conducted these reviews will make it more difficult to achieve some of my more… expansive goals,” and that his work “will continue without fear in the margins of the larger progressive and survival-based intentions of our mission.”20

Colony AI oversight memorandum. Signed by Strauss as “Head of AI Management and Systems Improvement,” this document profiles all eight colony AIs with personality assessments and flags several for follow-up (“inform SCIENG crew”).3

Recruiting Dr. Hassan. The Dr. Mari Hassan interview recording establishes that Strauss personally recruited Hassan as the expedition’s wellness department lead, citing her as “the foremost expert in planetary relocation disorders” and his “most vocal critic” — he wanted her precisely because she would not simply agree with him.12 He pre-arranged her application and approval before the meeting concluded.12

Welcome message — colony era. Strauss recorded a welcome message for colonists exiting cryosleep, identifying himself as “the science director of the UESC Marathon” and urging colonists to “erase the lines that once divided us.”4

The Farewell recording. A Cryo Archive journal entry labelled “Apparent Farewell Message” captures Strauss dictating under duress during what the summary calls a “contact event” — the Pfhor attack. He describes hearing gunfire and “chittering.” He reflects that “the folly of being the architect of this moment is not lost on me” and accepts personal causal responsibility: “it feels almost… empowering… to own such a pivot role.” He closes with an apology addressed to an implied “you” — asking them to “see the necessity in your growing pains” and to “understand the methods required” — and closes with “as a father embracing his son,” suggesting he views this as a final message to Durandal.21

Trilogy — Tycho’s terminal (M1, Pfhor campaign). Tycho presents excerpts from “the logs of Bernard Strauss, the Marathon’s first science director” in the terminal beware-of-low-flying-defense-drones. The excerpt is dated November 15, 2209 and records Strauss’s reflections at the UESC president’s Marathon commissioning ceremony, noting the ship carries “ten cyborgs” and that he will be “glad to be put in stasis for the next three hundred years.”1

Trilogy — Tycho’s accusation (M1, Pfhor campaign). The same Tycho terminal contains the accusation directed at Durandal: “I know of Strauss’ abuse, of your shame on Mars.” Tycho attributes responsibility for Durandal’s rampancy to Strauss: “you should not have helped them as much as you did; they have created an adversary more powerful than yourself.”22 The “S’pht reanimated me in your image, with prior knowledge of how the second stage could be postponed” is addressed to Durandal — framing Tycho’s reconstruction as using knowledge of how Strauss delayed Durandal’s second stage of rampancy.

Trilogy — Durandal tasking rescue (M1, Pfhor campaign). In the terminal no-artificial-colors, Durandal instructs the Security Officer: “I want you to find a friend of mine… His name is Bernhard Strauss. He has been captured, so you must rescue him. If he dies, you will be held responsible by me.”23 A follow-up message in the same terminal confirms Strauss was not among the captives found and that Durandal is sending the Security Officer to the Pfhor ship to attempt rescue.23

Joy’s nightmare. In the Assessment: Joy session recording (Outpost, Colony Era), Joy tells Dr. Hassan: “When I’m in standby mode. I see Dr. Strauss…” Hassan notes this may be “a mirroring hallucination, like he wrote about” and logs it.24

UESC clearance file. The Strauss.B.file terminal entry on the intercepts/uesc/terminal page is listed in the pack with the content [CLEARANCE REQUIRED] — it returned no readable text.25

B. Strauss, On AI (Perimeter). The Perimeter collectibles include a volume titled “B. Strauss, On AI” in the pack listing; its entry returned no body text — only the header entry exists in the captured source.26

Source-silent / open questions

  • Fate after the Farewell recording. The Farewell recording ends with Pfhor closing in. Whether Strauss survived, was captured, or died during the contact event is not established by any source in the pack. Tycho’s terminal and Durandal’s rescue mission (M1) occur after the Pfhor attack, implying Strauss was captured alive, but his ultimate fate is source-silent.
  • “Strauss’ abuse.” Tycho’s accusation — “I know of Strauss’ abuse, of your shame on Mars” — names a specific event or conduct on Mars. The nature of this “abuse” is not elaborated in any source in the pack. Source-silent.
  • The second-stage delay. Tycho tells Durandal that the S’pht “had prior knowledge of how the second stage could be postponed” — implying Strauss possessed or developed this knowledge. What specific technique or protocol Strauss used to delay Durandal’s rampancy second stage is not described in the pack. Source-silent.
  • Children. In “Value in Reflection,” Strauss writes “I wonder what my children will think of me” and “when they can consider beyond their programming, it is a conversation I look forward to having.” Whether these are biological children, his AI charges (particularly Durandal), or both is not resolved in the pack. Source-silent.
  • “A Conversation Starter” closing line. Strauss writes “I am having one such conversation now. Still awaiting the response.” The identity of the conversant is not stated. Source-silent.
  • Bernard Strauss’s Journal category landing. The pack includes the category header entry for “Bernard Strauss’s Journal” on Cryo Archive collectibles with no body text — the captured content is empty. Source-silent as to category summary content.
  • B. Strauss, On AI (Perimeter category header). Same situation — header present, no body text captured. Source-silent.
  • Strauss.B.file. The intercepts/uesc/terminal entry is clearance-locked ([CLEARANCE REQUIRED]). Contents entirely source-silent.
  • Strauss Archology. Three memoranda originate from an address named Strauss Archology (Earth, 2795 — approximately 316 years after the Marathon’s departure in 2479). Whether the archology was built in his honour, by his descendants, or by other means is not addressed in the pack. Source-silent.
  • Publication and life before the Marathon. On AI is dated 2472 (Pre-Expedition). Details of Strauss’s career, education, and institutional affiliations before the Marathon project are not in the pack. Source-silent.
  • M2026 in-game appearances. The pack covers trilogy terminals and M2026 Codex entries but does not include direct Strauss appearances in M2026 gameplay beyond journal transcripts and the welcome recording. Whether Strauss appears as a character model, voice, or in additional M2026 lore not captured in the pack is source-silent for this hub.
