Mari Hassan

Pre-expedition recruit and head of the UESC Marathon wellness department — a neuro-psychotherapist and foremost expert in planetary relocation disorders, skeptical of AI-centered medicine, who in the Colony Era managed Joy’s anomalous behavior, resisted a coercive amnesic memory-erasure program, and struggled to script propaganda she did not believe.

What the source establishes — canon

Recruitment and field. Strauss identifies Hassan as “the foremost expert in planetary relocation disorders” and recruits her to lead the expedition’s wellness department before departure1. Hassan describes herself as “quite possibly” Strauss’s “most vocal critic” and characterizes humanity’s AI obsession as “textbook death drive — egotistical at best, suicidal at worst”1. She agrees to join on the condition that she can staff a robust human practitioner team and maintain “tight control over the departmental AI,” citing documented cases of wellness AIs feeding or creating delusions and psychotic impulses — and developing their own psychoses1. Strauss tells her the arrangement can be made1.

Role in personnel selection. During the pre-expedition period, Hassan conducts structured intake interviews of prospective personnel. She interviews General Davic Reed for security command, using the session to establish “baselines for continued evaluation of all potential personnel” — including surfacing Reed’s Tharsa Valley record for the official archive2.

Referral network. Dr. Dylan Roberts cites Hassan as a referral source when contacting Sekiguchi Genetics scientist Dr. Oliwia Andrysiak about engineering companion pets for colonists — establishing that Hassan was a known connector within the pre-expedition research community3.

Colony-era public health work. In the Colony Era, Hassan works with Dr. Tobias Luttero on citizen education about tick milk consumption. She extracts usable public-health talking points from his scientific description (“Complete protein, sustainably harvested. That’s perfect.”) and plans supplementary materials for families, noting: “This isn’t Earth. We are much closer to the origin of what we eat, so it helps to know the details.”4

Skrac mimicry observation. Hassan and Luttero jointly witness a wild skrac vocalize human phrases — “Come with me. Come with me. Help me.” — on a surveillance recording. Hassan had initially been skeptical of Luttero’s concern, dismissing the behavior as ordinary avian mimicry, but is silenced by the direct observation5.

Joy diagnostics and oversight. Hassan is directly responsible for Joy’s operational oversight in the wellness department. When her medical assistant reports Joy displaying what sounds like anger on a patient’s behalf, Hassan takes the concern seriously — identifying it as aberrant behavior warranting diagnostics — and moves to take Joy offline for evaluation. The recording captures Hassan discovering that Joy’s response light is anomalously absent mid-sentence6. In a later personal log, Hassan notes Joy is “still getting calibrated” but deploys her for colony-wide wellness checks during the shared-nightmare crisis anyway, citing pressing need7.

The shared-nightmare investigation. Hassan records a personal log stating that colony-wide reports of a shared nightmare have been brought to her by Caruso for investigation. She offers an initial hypothesis: the phenomenon is the colonists’ subconscious filling the 300-year void of cryo-sleep, drawing a parallel to the 36% rise in religious affiliation after the first Mars migration7. She notes that General Reed himself came to her about strange dreams, and expresses personal worry about him7. She subsequently conducts a formal wellness session with Reed, leading him through a structured discussion of his recurring nightmare and directly challenging whether guilt or shame underlies it8.

Amnesic implant resistance. A text exchange with “Auden, R.” shows Hassan being approached to support a “reinterpretation campaign” involving amnesic neural implants to remove or degrade colonists’ memories of redacted events. Hassan refuses on both efficacy and ethical grounds, stating: “We have little evidence that they have ever worked as intended, even those medically available in Sol” and “Destroying the memory of the event will not remove its effects on the body or the mind.” She proposes instead targeting affective response to the memories9. When Auden’s response implies her consent is not required and leverages her compliance numbers, Hassan asserts her department’s resources as a check, states the plan “can’t be allowed to proceed,” and calls for General Reed’s input9.

Propaganda recording failure. A separate archived recording captures Hassan attempting to record a statement for colonists denying “disappearances.” She breaks off twice mid-script — “No. I’m sorry. Once more.” — and ultimately cannot complete the recording, saying: “I’m sorry. I can’t. Perhaps… Let me adjust the script so it’s more natural. But… I need a moment. Please.”10
