Skrac Mimicry

ANALYZING…

FILE TYPE: Surveillance Recording

PERIOD: Colony Era

SPEAKERS: Hassan, M. [MHAS], Luttero, T. [ID: TLUT], Wild Skrac [ID: SKRC]

TOPIC: Skrac Mimicry

SUMMARY: Dr. Tobias Luttero and Dr. Mari Hassan discussing skrac mimicry behavior.

===================================================================

[TLUT]: Please, state your name—and identify yourself as an independent witness.

[MHAS]: Dr. Mari Hassan, reluctant witness.

[TLUT]: Stop that, just listen.

[skrac noises]

[MHAS]: They sound normal to me.

[TLUT]: Mari, they are not normal. The mimicry was… uncanny.

[MHAS]: Ugh, even if it was, birds are known for mimicking noises.

[TLUT]: Yes, but vocal mimicry usually has an evolutionary use. Attracting mates, staking territory. A brood parasite mimicking its host’s calls.

[TLUT]: I’ve been on skrac duty since Angela took medical leave, and I don’t see the survival advantage in this behavior.

[TLUT]: They’re following people, flocking near the habs, and the scavenging has become… more aggressive.

[MHAS]: People feed them, so they make sounds like people. Look, I have to get back…

[TLUT]: This flock has been roosting on the roof of the crematorium. Night shift reports there are skracs in the vents.

[MHAS]: It is a warm place to sleep?

[TLUT]: There are human bones in some of their nests, Mari. Little charred fragments. This is behavioral adaptation over a span of months.

[skrac noises]

[SKRC]: Come with me.

[MHAS]: Shhh, did you hear it?

[SKRC]: Come with me. Come with me. Help me.

[TLUT]: There it is. Told you I’m not crazy.
