Luca Caruso

New Cascadia colonist who joined the UESC Marathon mission as a political operator and self-described “background” administrator; rose to President of New Cascadia following the deaths of Galea and her successors during the colony’s collapse.

What the source establishes — canon

Pre-expedition background and application. Before joining the Marathon mission, Caruso had experience in the Martian political circuit1. He was personally familiar with the social failures of the Mars colonization effort — food riots, the oxygen rationing scandal during the Hellas blackout, and the scarlet lung crisis that fuelled the Hellas Uprising1. His application to join the UESC Marathon mission was accepted1.

Self-described role and philosophy. In his application recording, Caruso described himself as “really just a background guy” who was pushed into the spotlight by politics, stating his preference for “meaty behind-the-scenes stuff — making people’s lives better, keeping things moving smoothly”1. He explicitly deferred to Galea, Strauss, and Reed as the public-facing leadership, positioning himself as a facilitator rather than a figurehead1. He expressed a specific interest in the social and political dimension of colonization — the transition from “great human experiment” to “this place is our home” — and cited the need for civilian representatives and laws1.

Council debate over the Anomaly. A Colony Era council meeting recording captures Caruso, Dr. Valentin Cole, and General Davic Reed debating the Anomaly response2. Caruso’s stated position was that the Anomaly was a lower priority than the contagion: “I’ve got people dying from a contagion we can’t identify”2. He dismissed Cole’s theories as “pretty goddamn thin” and asserted that he and Reed were aligned on prioritizing containment of the contagion2. Reed overruled him by granting Cole a ten-person Anomaly task force over Caruso’s objection, with Reed pledging to pull the task force if risks outweighed benefits2.

Colony broadcast as President: contagion crisis. A colony broadcast attributed to Caruso as President addresses New Cascadia colonists during “the height of quarantine and rationing measures”3. In it he reported that emergency food stockpiles would last at least three years with careful rationing; that research teams were working on a cure; and that the original landing craft could potentially be relaunched to the Marathon as an evacuation option if needed3. The broadcast ends with an appeal for collective remembrance rather than hope: “We only have each other”3.

Declaring a state of emergency over the Anomaly. A heavily corrupted colony-wide announcement identifies Caruso as its author, declaring a state of emergency over the Anomaly4. The announcement imposed restricted access to the Anomaly site, disbanded all Anomaly taskforces, mandated psychological evaluations and self-reports for anyone previously assigned to the Anomaly, and established a curfew4. Surviving text warns colonists of specific psychological symptoms associated with Anomaly proximity: being drawn to the site with no memory of how they got there, hallucinations of family members or friends, and sensory phenomena described as “lights” and “fog”4.

Reed’s private assessment of the conflict. In an unsent dictated letter to a deceased Mars resident, Reed stated that “Caruso is trying to call off the Anomaly task force, right as we’re about to make progress” and that Caruso “is declaring a state of emergency to override me”5. Reed described this as a mistake and stated his intention to overrule Caruso and send Cole back in5.

Cole’s communications referencing Caruso. Dr. Valentin Cole’s extension request to Reed, sent after Caruso’s disbandment order, states the team would “need Caruso’s approval” to lift restrictions — or, alternatively, to “go around him”6. Cole’s solo audio recording at the Anomaly site includes the line “You hear that, Caruso? I was right” — an apostrophe addressed to Caruso in absentia7.

Tasking Hassan to investigate the shared nightmare. Dr. Mari Hassan’s personal log records that “Caruso has me investigating” the colony-wide shared nightmare phenomenon8. Hassan expressed uncertainty about what Caruso expected her to find, framing it as a likely psychological consequence of displacement8.

Mention in Maverick Research. The decrypted dictation attributed to UESC biohazard technician F. Moreno includes the fragment “Caruso [REDACTED]” in the context of “principal investigators dead or missing” and “security around the sample is down”9. The surrounding text is heavily redacted; what Caruso did, authorized, or experienced in relation to the biotic sample experiments is not recoverable from this passage9.

Accession to the presidency and colony collapse. A post-apocalyptic log recorded after New Cascadia’s collapse states that Galea died, followed by “her successor, and her successor’s successor,” after which “they put Caruso in charge”10. The same log states that under President Caruso, “weird energy fields erupted across the planet’s surface,” crops and people died from the contagion, and others died for reasons the speaker leaves unspecified10. The speaker explicitly qualifies this: “I’d point the finger at Caruso, but he was just the fall guy. We were set up.”10 Caruso’s own response to these events, and the circumstances of his presidency’s end, are not described in any pack volume.

Source-silent / open questions

  • Caruso’s exact role or title before becoming President is not named in any pack volume. His application describes him as a political operator and administrator; the pack does not state what formal position he held during the early colony period.
  • The Maverick Research fragment “Caruso [REDACTED]” is unresolvable from the pack. Whether this refers to an action, a status, a directive, or something else is not established.
  • How or when Caruso became President — specifically the sequence of deaths of Galea and her successors — is not described in any pack volume beyond the post-apocalyptic log’s brief summary.
  • Caruso’s response to the contagion beyond public broadcasts and his position in the council debate is source-silent. No pack volume records him interacting with medical or research personnel directly.
  • The fate of Caruso himself — whether he survived, died during the collapse, or is otherwise accounted for — is not stated in any pack volume.
  • The redacted subject in the UESC Security Briefing associated with Arthur carries no direct Caruso attribution; no pack volume in this set connects that briefing to Caruso specifically.
  • Whether Caruso had any direct knowledge of or interaction with the Anomaly beyond the council debate and the announcement is source-silent.
