MIDA

Anti-authority revolutionary collective with roots in Martian political radicalism, active across Sol and Tau Ceti in the present day; adversary of the UESC and corporate power; operator of the VANDAL shell and “truthworm” information-release campaigns; PYROCLAST-targeting UESC Captain Orion; classified by the UESC as a primary threat actor in the present-day Marathon investigation.

What the source establishes — canon

Runners’ Guide classification. MIDA’s Runners’ Guide entry classifies it as a Collective with the role “Anti-authority revolutionary resistance.” Its faction agent is designated _gantry.1

Core agenda. The Runners’ Guide states that MIDA “stand[s] in opposition to UESC and corporate control of Mars resources and citizenry.” The current generation is described as “a newer generation of revolutionaries” whose “agenda ties to grievances that predate the launch of the UESC Marathon.” The Guide frames them as “reigniting old fires to burn away a stagnant, corrupt world in order to build a new one on the other side of revolution.”1

Pre-Marathon political history. A historical terminal recovered from the Marathon’s archive traces MIDA’s origins as a Martian political party. MIDA “gained control of Mars for only three months” during a failed coup in 2321, but “their rule was ruthless and cruel” — MIDA death squads “killed anyone who they suspected of being loyal to the UEG,” with an estimated ten percent of the population killed. After the coup failed, MIDA leaders were executed and the organization was legally banned. It survived as an underground terrorist organization and, according to that same record, “due to its spectacular funding and excellent personnel, has grown to be one of the most feared terrorist groups active anywhere in Sol.”2

MIDA and the Third Martian War. The same historical terminal identifies the MIDA radicals as a significant factor in the lead-up to the Third Martian War (2345–48 E.A.D.), citing the “failure of the Martian economy and a long series of political struggles between Mars and Earth” as having “continually strengthened” MIDA, with the building of the Marathon and the subsequent failure of the CRISTs accelerating that radicalization.2

Timeline entry: 2466. A chronology compiled by a human survivor aboard the Pfhor vessel gives the entry “2466 — Failed Martian Coup, MIDA controls government for short period,” consistent with the historical terminal above.3

Presence during the Marathon’s construction and voyage. Captain di Roxas’s annotated overview of the Marathon notes in passing whether it was “worth mentioning MIDA” given the political climate during construction, suggesting MIDA was sufficiently prominent on Mars at that time to warrant acknowledgment in an official document.4 During the Marathon’s centuries-long voyage, pro-MIDA graffiti appeared on the hull’s exterior (on Deimos), visible to external instruments; the resulting investigation was inconclusive and the UESC scrubbed feeds and removed the graffiti quietly.5

Pre-expedition UESC counterintelligence against MIDA. Informal negotiations between a UESC representative and Traxus reveal the UESC’s active effort to “plant moles in MIDA,” described as expensive: the UESC cited the daily cost of “hostile labor management” on Mars as leverage in a supply-chain negotiation with Traxus.6 A UESC internal report on Operation Project Vespid details a planned false-flag operation at a Martian union sit-in — undercover UESC operatives embedded in the union were to plant explosive devices to implicate union members and justify mass arrests of labor organizers, with MIDA-adjacent framing used as political cover.7

MIDA’s characterization of the Marathon crew. A pre-expedition media record shows MIDA publicly called the non-cryo crew members of the Marathon a “sacrificial janitorial team,” a statement a CyberAcme representative labeled “incredibly disrespectful” while refusing to engage with “terrorist organizations.”8

MIDA document archiving. Multiple Perimeter Collectibles documents — including leaked CyberAcme PR guidelines, a CyberAcme bioaugment incidents database excerpt, a UESC Project Vespid internal report, and a radio comms transcript on arms trading — are identified as collected by “an unknown archivist [possible MIDA affiliation]” with ex post facto annotations. Those annotations express sympathy for workers and suspicion of UESC-corporate collusion, and identify shell companies as Traxus fronts.791011

Colony-era MIDA insurrection on Tau Ceti IV. A personal digital recorder captures two unnamed colonists debating whether to invoke the MIDA name on a resistance manifesto in New Cascadia. One speaker argues that “the second we add MIDA to the masthead, the instant we identify our agenda as an extension of old wars — people are going to get scared.” The other argues they need “old scars” and that invoking MIDA is the only way to spark mass action.12 A separate recorder captures a larger group of unnamed colonists discussing a pre-existing manifesto document they found buried in a sub-root drive — of unknown authorship — and deciding to adopt it as the foundation for “a new MIDA for a new world.”13

The MIDA Manifesto broadcast. A broadcast message from _gantry (listed as MIDA’s faction agent) delivered to all UESC reads: “MIDA is memory. Earth. Luna. Mars. Now Tau Ceti. MIDA is scar tissue. Revival. Renewal. Rebirth. MIDA is vengeance. Resistance. Defiance. Riot.” The broadcast accuses the UESC of controlling “the narrative, revisionist patch notes written by tyrants” and invokes the 30,000 dead of Tau Ceti (“If 30,000 people die in a distant star system and no one’s there to hear it, did they make a sound?”).14

TRUTHworm releases. Two “truthworm” documents appear in the Outpost collectibles, both flagged as [file read error] with “sub-coding in document prevents digital analysis.” TRUTHWORM.0152 is a visual/textual broadcast asserting MIDA’s patient, prepared, always-present nature (“We are patient || prepared / We are here || always / We are MIDA”). TRUTHWORM.0834 is a LIES-grid document demanding accountability for the Marathon — “what aren’t they telling us / what are they hiding / we see the skeleton / the carcass in the sky” — and closes with MIDA’s cross-generational claim: “earth>moon>mars>tauceti / we are calling / they will answer.”1516

MIDA’s media presence and UESC seizure. An intercepted social media post from the account @We_Are_Mida (labeled #somewhereintheheavens) promotes information releases about the Marathon’s rediscovery and references suppressed UESC records. The post’s domain was subsequently seized by the UESC Office of Data Protection and Interstellar Confidentiality under CyberSecurity Code 77 § 48.92 (dated 27.05.2888). A second post from @We_Are_MIDA (#theythoughtweweregone, theywerewrong) appeared after the seizure, implying continued operation.1718

Orion personnel file. A classified personnel file on UESC Captain “Orion” (full name and position: Captain, 1st Tau Ceti Investigatory Unit) was compiled by MIDA operatives and shared by _gantry. Orion is classified as a PYROCLAST target. The file details Orion’s background: clashes with the APHELION Group on Mars and Luna; work in “high-security detention units on Luna, notorious for cruelties like ‘corrective isolation’ and ‘punitive force-feeding’”; public advocacy for “bio-augment manipulation” as a “persuasion tactic”; holding the company line at the Vallis Bohr Revolt; suspected ties to the Children of Mars erasure conspiracy; and suspected deployment of an unregulated military AI, Cerberus, “capable of mass violence.” Notably, Orion is listed as having a personal relationship with MIDA agent “_philomena,” described as estranged.19

Orion’s counter-message to Runners. A recorded message from Orion delivered to Runners pushes back on MIDA: “MIDA doesn’t care about starving civs on Mars. They care about power.” He cites the historical coup death squads and argues “MIDA is the same” as it was 500 years ago, urging Runners to “think about who your allies are… and what they really have you fighting for.”20

VANDAL shell origins. The VANDAL shell’s history entry in the Runners’ Guide states it “started with MIDA.” MIDA operatives took stolen baseline shells, modified them with amplified agility, MICROJETS on the lower limbs, and a DISRUPT CANNON in the forearm, then dressed them in streetwear and executed “a daylight attack on a UESC weapons caravan.” The resulting headline caused MIDA recruitment to go up “7500% the week after.” The GLITCH series became a standard MIDA operative shell; the accompanying streetwear fashion spread to Martian youth generally, complicating UESC enforcement efforts.21

AMPLIFY ability origins. The VANDAL’s AMPLIFY prime ability was pioneered by MIDA after athletes first jailbroke shell movement mechanics; the Runners’ Guide credits MIDA with making amplified movement “scary effective” and pioneering its modern wave.22

Luca Caruso’s framing of MIDA. A Marathon applicant from the Martian political circuit, Luca Caruso, references MIDA in passing: “Not saying I agree with groups like MIDA, but we made a lot of mistakes on Mars” — citing food riots, oxygen rationing scandals, the Hellas Uprising, and scarlet lung wards as context for MIDA’s rise.23

Civilian interrogation: sedition. A colony-era interrogation log shows UESC interrogator Teig detained civilian cartographer Preston Phillips on suspicion of having authored “The Severed Twins,” a book of children’s fairy tales suspected of encoding seditious MIDA-adjacent content (the interrogator: “Twins separated by force? Gods fueled by sacrifice? I know sedition when I see it”). Phillips was released due to “lack of evidence.” The interrogator mentions that as a child they “even thought MIDA were heroes.”24

Arachne’s assessment of MIDA. An encrypted transmission from CHARTER (Arachne’s virtual agent) to a Runner acknowledges MIDA but frames them instrumentally: “MIDA offers currency and ideology, but their aspirations remain disappointingly corporeal. They scream ‘liberation’ and ‘independence,’ as if the stars care about borders while they burn into nothing.” Arachne states its interests align with MIDA’s only “not out of a shared conviction, but a shared trajectory” — “revolutionary chaos is the perfect mask for your truer purpose.”25

MIDA vs. Traxus (present-day intelligence competition). Four intercepted Traxus internal chat logs from May 2888 record MIDA as an active adversary in the intelligence race around the Marathon’s rediscovery. Traxus identifies MIDA as having cracked a purchase order passphrase related to United Shipping operations and as actively targeting the same intelligence Traxus is pursuing. Traxus feeds MIDA intelligence to the UESC to “disrupt MIDA” and “slow them down,” explicitly intending to let “the UESC and MIDA fight for us.” Traxus internally dismisses MIDA as “children playing revolution” and “an annoyance, not a threat,” while simultaneously identifying them as a meaningful operational risk.26272829

UESC classified assessment (Project:Goliath). A UESC memorandum dated 20 October 2795, classified top secret, outlines response plans for the Marathon communications blackout. It explicitly names MIDA as a primary concern: if communications disruption “was fabricated, or exacerbated, by anti-government elements (MIDA) to facilitate a disruption in communication between the home system and Tau Ceti and exploited to seize control of the Colony, all parties responsible for, or in support of, the act must be uncovered and neutralized forthwith.” The memo acknowledges that “information came to light post-launch that led us to believe that there were members of groups sympathetic to MIDA amongst the original crew.”30

UESC STARTING_LINE intelligence report. A UESC classified intelligence report (Codename: STARTING LINE) on an external infosec breach identifies MIDA as “primary” party, with Traxus OffWorld Industries and Sekiguchi Genetics as “secondary” parties. The report states: “Initial disruption points to MIDA instigation.” The breach compromised intelligence related to “PRO:GO and its target.” MIDA is identified as having conducted a “data incursion” into UESC netspace, with possible collaboration between MIDA and other parties of interest.31
