A reader’s orientation guide to the Season 1 vs Season 2 content layers of Marathon (2026), and the Sentinel as the Season-2 runner class. The S1/S2 boundary is inferred from corpus structure — the source does not use the words “Season 1” or “Season 2” in the captured material. This note maps what the captured corpus contains and flags what is structural inference vs. source-stated.
What the source establishes — canon
The Runners’ Guide version string as a layer signal
Every Runners’ Guide entry carries an in-fiction version stamp. The captured corpus shows two distinct version families:
v.1.001.xx— appears on entries present in both the Cryo Archive and early Outpost/Perimeter/Dire Marsh content (e.g., Compiler Overview:v.1.001.05.tciv).1v.1.002.xx— appears on Sentinel Shell, Snare Mine, Defender System, Anomalous Husks, Anomalous Reverb, Cradle entries, and Dire Marsh (Night) orientation.234
The version increment is source-present. Whether it maps cleanly onto a player-facing “Season” release boundary is an inference (see Source-silent, below).
Sentinel — the eighth runner class
The captured corpus contains eight Runner pages: Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Rook, Sentinel, Thief, Triage, Vandal.5 The Sentinel Shell carries v.1.002.01.tciv — the same minor version series as the Dire Marsh (Night) and Cradle entries.
A representative Season 1 runner ability, for contrast. The Rook Frame’s tactical ability Signal Mask carries v.1.001.01.tciv — confirming the base seven runner classes’ abilities are versioned within the same S1 family as their Shell overview pages, not individually re-versioned. Signal Mask’s in-source HISTORY field states the ability is “relatively new. Pure back-channel RUNNER tech hacked together somewhere in orbit above TAU CETI in response to the UESC’s mobile war crimes. No one knows who coded it. The specs just dropped into a local backchannel and spread like wildfire amongst the earliest in-system trespassers.”6 This is offered as a single representative data point on how S1-versioned runner ability lore is structured (in-fiction HISTORY field, anonymous/backchannel origin framing) — a direct comparison point against the Sentinel’s own sourced operational history (Trenchway Holdout, above), which uses the same HISTORY-field convention at the v.1.002 tier.
Sentinel Shell (SHELL MODEL: SENTINEL · SHELL SERIES: Rampart · ROLE: Defensive Strategist · TECH: Defend / Entrap) — engineered for area and conflict control, syncing with gadgets and devices. Abilities listed in-source: DEFENDER SYSTEM, SNARE MINE, CASTLE DOCTRINE, PREY TRACKER.2
Snare Mine (SENTINEL TACTICAL ABILITY) — proximity-triggered detonation device; deploys submunitions that immobilize hostiles in the blast. Can be placed on most surfaces.7
Defender System (SENTINEL PRIME ABILITY) — portable area defense device; identifies and eliminates incoming explosive ordnance. Does not stop bullets. Engineered to counter SHELL-specific threats including SEARCH AND DESTROY and TRACKER DRONES.8
GADGE personality series — the standard shell personality loaded on Sentinel Shells. The source labels it “illegal, invasive identity theft in Sol” — compiled from stolen neural models from the Intelligent Design Labs, Stockholm, Earth. Its function: reinforce intuitive mechanical design and critical thinking in hostile environments.2
Sentinel operational history (source-stated): The first registered Sentinel operations were the Trenchway Holdout beneath Antarctica, where researchers in hijacked UESC shells survived a three-month siege by the UESC Central Security Agency. Sentinel tactics spread via Runner backchannels after that event.2
Dire Marsh (Night) — the map that grounds the S2 layer
The Mirror holds a distinct map page — codex/world/dire-marsh-night — separate from the daytime Dire Marsh. Its orientation entry gives: ZONE: DIRE MARSH [NIGHT] · FUNCTION: Colony Ag-Hub / UESC Anomaly Research.3 Volume counts from the Mirror Inventory: Dire Marsh (day) 51 collectibles · Dire Marsh (Night) 61 collectibles — the largest single collectibles page in the corpus.9
The Night zone orientation states that UESC Security Forces have commandeered the COMPLEX’s upper facility for active research into the ANOMALY breach site, and that NETWORK TOWERS have been established across Dire Marsh. The orientation also notes a UESC WARDEN is guarding the site.3
New threats associated with the Night zone (source-stated)
The Unknown Origin threats page contains two entries versioned v.1.002.05.tciv:
- Anomalous Husks — humanoid but not human; corrupted shells and UESC frames reanimated. Source: “Something roams DIRE MARSH at night.” Explode on close contact.1
- Anomalous Reverb — “ethereal pockets of unknown matter that haunt DIRE MARSH once the sun has set.” Exist only near the ANOMALY and only at night. Launch aggressive projectiles when disturbed.1
Skrac
The Skrac Study appears in Dire Marsh (Night) collectibles, not in the Threats index. Source describes it as Specimen 092, an avian-analog xeno-biological organism — nocturnal, carnivorous ambush predator. The survey notes that recent flock behavior (mass diving to slash prey) appears new; the cause is unclear.10
Cradle — Shell-cloning upgrade line
The Cradle loot page carries v.1.002.01.tciv throughout. Manufacturer: SEKIGUCHI GENETICS (co-venture with CYBERACME). Four entries: Matter Converted (overview), Custom Chassis (WEAVEWORM feeding / MATTER CONVERTER), Second Thoughts (WEAVEWORM colony types and CRADLE stats), Well Rounded (stat optimization per attribute).4
What the captured corpus contains
Inferred Season 1 content (version v.1.001.xx entries; present in V1.7; present across all four base maps):
- Maps: Cryo Archive, Dire Marsh (day), Outpost, Perimeter
- Runner classes: Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Rook, Thief, Triage, Vandal (7 classes)
- Threats (Unknown Origin): Compiler (
v.1.001.05) — marked [unavailable] in source, intel suppressed - UESC Threats: 11 entries — sourced across the four base maps
- Factions / Contracts / Intercepts: MIDA, NuCaloric, Traxus, Sekiguchi, Arachne, CyberAcme
Inferred Season 2 content (version v.1.002.xx entries; absent from V1.7; Dire Marsh Night as anchoring map):
- Map: Dire Marsh (Night) — 61 collectible volumes, 7 exploration volumes
- Runner class: Sentinel (8th class; Sentinel Shell / Snare Mine / Defender System / Castle Doctrine / Prey Tracker)
- Threats (Unknown Origin): Anomalous Husks, Anomalous Reverb (both
v.1.002.05, both Night-zone-specific) - Collectible / biological entry: Skrac Study (Dire Marsh Night collectibles)
- Loot: Cradle line (
v.1.002.01) — 4 entries (Matter Converted, Custom Chassis, Second Thoughts, Well Rounded)
Corpus coverage note: The Mirror Inventory counts 1,102 volumes across 148 pages, captured 2026-06-23. The Brane SPEC records 97.5% segmentation coverage.
Source-silent / open questions
- The source never uses the phrase “Season 1” or “Season 2” in the captured corpus. The seasonal grouping in this note is inferred from (a) the version string change (
v.1.001→v.1.002), (b) the presence/absence of content in V1.7 (not a source — used as a negative indicator only), and (c) Dire Marsh Night being a structurally distinct map. This remains an inference until Bungie or karnemir states it explicitly. - Version string semantics are unclear. The
.tcivsuffix and the minor-version increment could reflect in-fiction publication dates, game update batches, or both. The source does not explain the version scheme. - Castle Doctrine and Prey Tracker are listed as Sentinel abilities in the source but the corpus does not contain dedicated entries for them (unlike Snare Mine and Defender System, which each have their own volumes). Whether these entries exist but were not captured, or do not yet have entries, is unknown.
- Skrac is in collectibles, not the Threats index. It is not listed under Unknown Origin threats. Whether it will appear in a future Threats entry is source-silent.
- The Sentinel’s release date relative to other runners is not stated in the source. The version string differential is the only corpus signal.
- Activities (UESC Wardens: Wraith, Scorch, Tox, Frost) carry season-ambiguous content in the activities pages — their version strings have not been fully catalogued for this note; needs a dedicated pass.
