F’lickta

A native creature of Lh’owon, described by the S’pht as combative; left behind in the ducts of Lh’owon’s cave systems when the S’pht’Kr departed, and cited by S’pht themselves as a benchmark for non-sentience.

What the source establishes — canon

Named by the S’pht. The F’lickta are identified by a S’pht terminal as creatures the S’pht call by that name 1. The naming attribution comes from a Pfhor source quoting the S’pht term, not from the S’pht directly in that passage.

Combative. A Pfhor Science Manager (Zone 29-s, Lh’owon Garrison) reports that the caves surrounding a former S’pht habitation site “continually” contain F’lickta, which the report characterises as combative 1. The Pfhor framing is military-observational; no further behavioural detail is given.

Associated with S’pht cave habitations. The Pfhor report notes that the caves where F’lickta are found show archaeological evidence of being a former centre of S’pht life, apparently abandoned after an ancient battle 1.

Left behind in the ducts by a departing S’pht clan. A S’pht farewell terminal records: “We are leaving behind many F’lickta to keep the ducts clean and working. They should be able to build one of their stable societies here — there is plenty of food.” 2. The same terminal requests any clan that later comes to respect these creatures and leave them to continue their work, preserving the S’pht home on Lh’owon 2. This establishes: (a) F’lickta were deliberately retained rather than taken; (b) they were assigned a maintenance function (duct upkeep); (c) the S’pht expected them capable of forming stable societies independently; (d) food sufficiency on Lh’owon was assumed.

Used as a non-sentience baseline by S’pht. A S’pht terminal from the Citadel bunkers debates whether S’pht sentience is innate or induced by the birthing operation, using the F’lickta as the lower bound: “Perhaps our own sentience is induced by the birthing operation, and that at some time, we were no more sentient than a F’lickta.” 3. The F’lickta are thus treated by the S’pht as a creature that is, at least in their understanding, not sentient — the implied contrast with S’pht (who require cyber-organic symbiosis for sentience by their own model).

Listed among Lh’owon’s creatures alongside nd’tre and s’ct’lac’tr. A partially decrypted alien data set from the Cryo Archive (M2026) includes a corrupted S’pht-identified text that names the f’lickta alongside nd’tre and s’ct’lac’tr as creatures of the same fundamental stuff as the S’pht and the stars: “we, the s’pht; made of the same stuff as the f’lickta, and of the nd’tre and s’ct’lac’tr and of the stars and of the dust and of the tide” 4. This positions the F’lickta as one of several native Lh’owon lifeforms acknowledged by S’pht cosmological tradition.

Flooding as a trigger — active combat against the Pfhor garrison. A terminal from the Marathon 2 Garrison level records a live tactical observation, distinct in register from the archived intelligence reports above: “The garrison floods, and with the floods come the native F’lickta. The Pfhor are fighting them everywhere.” 5. The speaker is not identified in this volume, but the terminal directs the player to exploit the resulting chaos to access a Pfhor computer system while the Pfhor are occupied fighting the F’lickta 5. This establishes: (a) flooding specifically brings F’lickta into contact with the Pfhor garrison, consistent with their assigned duct-maintenance role near water systems; (b) F’lickta engage the Pfhor in direct, sustained combat at a scale described as “everywhere” rather than isolated skirmishes; (c) this occurs at the Garrison — a different Lh’owon location from the cave habitation site described in the Pfhor Science Manager’s report.

Source-silent / open questions

  • Physical description: the source gives no physical appearance, size, anatomy, or distinguishing features of the F’lickta.
  • The nature of their “combativeness” is not elaborated — the Pfhor report does not indicate whether they attack on sight, defend territory, or were reacting to intrusion.
  • Whether the S’pht’s claim of F’lickta non-sentience is accurate or is itself a mistaken assumption is left open by the source; the S’pht terminal frames it as part of an unresolved internal debate about the origins of their own sentience.
  • The “birthing operation” the S’pht reference in connection with their own sentience is not described or explained in any pack volume.
  • The duct-maintenance behaviour attributed to F’lickta (“keep the ducts clean and working”) is asserted by the departing S’pht clan but its mechanism is not described.
  • The “stable societies” the S’pht expect F’lickta to form are not described; social structure, hierarchy, or organisation are source-silent.
  • nd’tre and s’ct’lac’tr (named alongside f’lickta in the Alien History entry) are not described or referenced elsewhere in the pack.
  • Whether the F’lickta encountered by the Pfhor ~15 years after the S’pht departure are the same population left behind by that clan is not stated.
  • The F’lickta are not mentioned in any M2026 in-game entry outside the partially decrypted Alien History collectible.
  • The speaker of the Curiouser and Curiouser terminal describing F’lickta fighting the Pfhor garrison during flooding is not identified in this volume.
  • Whether the Garrison-level F’lickta engagement is the same population described in the Pfhor Science Manager’s cave report, or a separate group, is not stated — the pack does not establish whether F’lickta occupy a single contiguous population or multiple dispersed groups across Lh’owon.
